Michael Vinten has led the Wellington Youth Sinfonietta as its Music Director for 20 years, growing it from its inception as a training orchestra into an acknowledged orchestra for young players wishing to develop their symphonic orchestral music skills. During this time he has mentored many soloists, conductors, and composers.
Michael completed an honours degree in Music at Victoria University and graduated with a Masters in Orchestral Conducting from the Cincinnati College Conservatory in the USA. On his return to New Zealand he was appointed Music Director of the Schola Musica, the training orchestra of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Since Schola was disbanded in 1989, he has become one of this country’s busiest freelance musicians. In 1991, he was appointed Chorus Master and Associate Conductor for the NBR New Zealand Opera, a position he has held ever since. A composer, he has often been commissioned to write operatic, orchestral, vocal, and choral works. Michael regularly conducts opera, orchestral, and choral performances.
